My First App Has Been Live for 1 Month. The Marketing Didn't Succeed. Here is My "Bug Report".

When your code crashes, you don't panic. You check the logs, find the bug, and fix it(with AI lol). So why don't we treat marketing the same way? I spent 1 month doing organic marketing. It tanked. Here is my Marketing Bug Report šŸ›šŸ‘‡

By JR

If you spend enough time on X, you’ll see teenagers making $100k MRR overnight. It creates a massive survivor bias.

The truth? Success is often a mix of right time, right place, and right people—it’s hard to copy.

But failure is universal, and we can all learn from it.

So, here is my reality check: My app has been live for exactly one month.

Total downloads? A few dozen. Daily downloads? Single digits.

As a solo founder with zero budget, I am in the pure organic stage.

I’m not running paid ads or scaling with money.

My entire strategy relies on natural traffic at this point. But right now, my strategy has a lot of bugs.

01The "Check the Logs" Mindset

When numbers look bad, it’s easy to get emotional and give up. But as an engineer, I know that everything has a cause and effect.

When an app crashes, you don't cry—you check the logs, find the bug, and fix it. Marketing is the exact same thing.

My organic marketing philosophy is simple: Good content is something people are willing to view even without your product.

It must either educate or entertain (or both). If it does neither, it’s just noise.

Effort without the right direction is useless.

For 10 years, I worked out randomly with no real results. In the last 3 months, I started using my app, tracking my diet, and applying progressive overload.

My pull-up reps skyrocketed, and my body changed more in 90 days than in the previous decade.

If I can hack my fitness, I can hack this marketing bug. Here is my log analysis across all my organic channels and how I am fixing them next month.

02TikTok: The Algorithm Trap

Here is my baseline for TikTok views:

  • ~200 views: You are in algorithm jail. The content is bad or the account is flagged.
  • 300 to 1,000 views: Okay, but needs improvement.
  • Stable 1,000+ views: A healthy account with potential.

The Bug:

I have two main accounts ("Greenbow" for my IP, and "Jack" for fitness/nature). They were hovering around 1,000 views.

Then, I decided to show off. I spent 30 minutes making high-tech AIGC videos instead of my usual slideshow.

The result? Views dropped to 200. When I switched back to my normal content, I couldn't break 600 views.

The Fix:

I confused the algorithm. You cannot change your content style and audience on a whim just to "flex" a new skill. High effort does not equal high views.

Next month, I am sticking strictly to my niche. I am also properly "warming up" my accounts—using them to only watch, like, and share fitness content to retrain the algorithm on who my target audience is.

(Sneak Peek: I've been shocked by others AIGC like the above. I am also secretly testing a fully AI-generated digital avatar account. If the workflow succeeds, I’ll open-source it here).

03SEO & My Vlog: The Harsh Reality

Screenshot from the founder's organic marketing experiment

I started a vlog to post these articles and hopefully get some Google search traffic. I published my first post, searched the exact title on Google, and... nothing. Zero results.

The Bug: SEO doesn't work overnight. Without domain authority or backlinks, Google won't index you.

The Fix: SEO is a long game. I even didn't this before I started this journey. I'll do comprehensive research and share my specific approach and the results probably in the future - Let't see how much traffic this body can bring lol...

04ASO (App Store Optimization)

The Bug: I checked my Apple Connect analytics. I am getting Impressions, but the Conversion Rate to actual Installs is terrible.

The Fix: Having traffic doesn't mean having users. My app preview screenshots likely aren't hitting the users' pain points. Next step: analyze competitors and redesign my App Store images.

05Reddit: The 48-Hour Ban

Reddit is a goldmine for traffic, but it is ruthless. I posted what I thought was great content. It got over 10,000 views... and my account was banned within 48 hours for self-promotion.

The Bug: Treating Reddit like a billboard.

The Fix: Reddit is not my main focus right now, but I will spend 10 minutes a day giving pure value in specific subreddits without dropping links in the next 2 weeks for building karma and trust first.

06Final Thought

This is just Month 1.

I’ll keep sharing the real numbers—good or bad—as I figure this out in public.

One question for founders who have been through this:

What’s the biggest organic growth lesson you learned after launching your first product?

I’d genuinely love to hear your experience. Leave a comment for you experience and we can learn from each other’s mistakes instead of repeating them.
